Finding the Right Tools: Why Success Isn’t One-Size-Fits-All
Share
When I first got into golf, I had no idea what I was doing. Being left-handed, I started golfing left-handed, and my first putter wasn’t chosen for performance—it was chosen because it looked cool. Later, I switched to golfing right-handed and asked the golf store employee, “What putter does Tiger Woods use?” If it was good enough for Tiger, it had to be good enough for me, right?
Fast forward a few years, and while the putter might have been good enough for Tiger Woods, it wasn’t right for me. Golf isn’t just about having the best gear—it’s about finding the right tools that match your unique style, strengths, and approach. And life? Life works exactly the same way.
The Trap of Copy-Paste Success
It’s easy to look at someone else’s success and assume that copying their process will yield the same results. We see someone excelling in their field, using specific tools, strategies, or systems, and think, If it works for them, it’ll work for me.
But success isn’t plug-and-play. Just because something works for someone else doesn’t mean it’ll work for you. Tiger Woods’ putter was tailored to his style, precision, and thousands of hours of practice. But I wasn’t Tiger Woods. I didn’t have his stroke, his experience, or his finesse.
Ask Yourself: Is This Working for Me?
Whether in golf, business, or life, we need to pause and ask:
- Is this process actually working for me?
- Does this tool fit my unique style?
- Am I approaching this challenge in the way that works best for me?
We often assume that something isn’t working because we aren’t good enough. But sometimes, it’s simply because we’re using the wrong tool for our approach.
Know Your Stroke
In golf, there are different putting styles—some people have a straight-back, straight-forward stroke, while others have an arc-style stroke. The right putter for you depends on your natural stroke. The same principle applies to life: your tools and strategies should match your natural strengths and approach.
- Are you someone who thrives with structure and routine?
- Do you excel in creative chaos?
- Do you perform best under pressure or with ample preparation?
Understanding your natural “stroke” allows you to select tools and strategies that align with your strengths.
Stop Comparing, Start Customizing
Comparison is the thief of joy—and effectiveness. While it’s helpful to learn from successful people, blindly copying their methods is a recipe for frustration. Instead:
- Start with inspiration: Learn from others, but don’t be afraid to modify their methods.
- Test your tools: Trial and error are part of the journey. Experiment with different approaches.
- Listen to yourself: Trust your intuition. Sometimes, you already know what feels right.
Commit to Your Own Process
When I finally found a putter that matched my stroke, everything changed. It wasn’t about trying to look like Tiger Woods anymore—it was about finding what worked for me.
In life, commit to your own process:
- Trust your gut.
- Use tools that fit your style.
- Focus on results that align with your goals—not someone else’s.
Remember, the pros in any field don’t all use the same tools—they use the tools that fit their style.
The One for You
At the end of the day, your success isn’t about finding the best tool—it’s about finding the one for you.
When you stop chasing someone else’s formula and start building your own, you’ll realize that success isn’t a straight line. It’s a path uniquely tailored to your strengths, style, and goals.
So ask yourself:
- What tools do I actually need?
- What’s my approach?
- Am I building my own path, or following someone else’s?
The answers might surprise you—but they’ll also set you free.
Find your stroke. Use your tools. Build your path.
