Appreciate the Unsung Heroes: A Call to Gratitude and Excellence
Share
As I walked Bear, my one-year-old Australian Shepherd, down our regular trail recently, I noticed a man restocking the doggy bag station. It struck me—I’ve walked this path countless times and never stopped to think about who ensures those bags are always available.
So, I walked over and thanked him. He smiled, and I realized something: there are so many people doing jobs that often go unnoticed but are essential for our daily lives. Whether it’s the person stocking agua frescas at my favorite taqueria or those fixing streetlights after storms, these unsung heroes deserve recognition.
The Silent Sacrifice
It’s easy to feel unnoticed and underappreciated, especially if your work goes thankless. But here’s the truth: just because a job isn’t seen doesn’t mean it’s unimportant. Whether you’re restocking bags or running a classroom, your efforts matter.
There’s a clear distinction, though. I’m not talking about people who do nothing and complain about being unnoticed. I’m talking about those who show up every day, give their all, and still feel invisible. If that’s you, know this: your work is significant because you make it so.
The Strength of Stealth
One of my favorite analogies comes from military planes—stealth bombers. These planes don’t show up on radar, but they’re incredibly effective. Like the stealth bomber, you don’t need to be seen to make an impact. In fact, flying under the radar often gives you the advantage of preparation and surprise.
When you’re underrated, you have the opportunity to overdeliver. It’s not about being flashy; it’s about being excellent.
The Gratitude Game
This week, I’ve made it my mission to thank people at every opportunity. Whether it’s a cashier, a gas station attendant, or a logistics coordinator, I say, “Thanks for doing what you do.” The smiles I’ve received in return have been priceless.
Gratitude isn’t just for others; it’s for us, too. It reminds us of the collective effort behind every success. None of us are self-made. Even the most independent achievements require someone else to recognize, support, or purchase what you’ve created.
Be Irreplaceable
No matter your role, strive to excel in such a way that you leave a void if you’re not there. Make your contributions so exceptional that even if you’re replaced, your presence is missed. Excellence speaks louder than accolades.
Whatever your job may be—teaching, speaking, cooking, or even refilling doggy bags—perform it with such excellence that people remember the quality you brought to it.
Let’s commit to two things:
- Thanking the unsung heroes around us.
- Becoming the type of professional whose absence is felt because of the excellence we bring to every task.
The ripple effect of gratitude and excellence will shape not just our lives but the lives of everyone we touch.
