I look back at BaylorBarbee.com from almost 20 years ago…before the days of social media, you had to create your own buzz. I was a member of the Baylor University Football team and was looking for ways to interact with fans…I taught myself how to make a website in my free time.
I look at where the site is all these years later, (and every iteration of the site between then and now) and I know a few things for sure…
- ALL of the versions of BaylorBarbee.com were authentically ME at that time period. The kid with an ego who wanted fan interactions, the rapper who was selling mixtapes, the depressed and insecure guy who was trying to get an ex to love him again because he didn’t know his worth…. to the guy who stands in front of the largest companies in the world and speaks on self-leadership and opportunity.
NO MATTER WHAT, ALWAYS REMAIN AUTHENTICALLY YOU
- Don’t compare yourself to anyone. Look how bad the site looked back then…I can laugh now, but at the time I did my best. Life works the same way. Too often, we look at where someone is, but don’t see what they had to do to get there. Embrace the long-game. Don’t compare the chapter of life your in to someone else’s entire book… you don’t know how many chapters it took them to get to their level.
THE ONLY COMPARISON YOU SHOULD MAKE IS ARE YOU BETTER THAN YOU WERE YESTERDAY
- I’m never satisfied, I always tweak things, I always change things. I had an aspiring speaker reach out the other day asking to help him create a platform like mine. I told him, this wasn’t a creation..this is is twenty years of trial and error, valuable mistakes, and a constant pursuit of a better brand.
SMALL CHANGES COMPOUNDED OVER TIME, CREATE LARGE RESULTS.
Wherever you’re at in your career, focus on the tweaks…they create the masterpiece down the road
