After a good 6 mile run this morning as I prepare for my next Triathlon, I sat down and started stretching with my foam roller and y-Roller. As I rocked back and forth, massaging my legs, I started really looking at the foam roller and thought about its purpose in injury prevention and recovery. The more I thought about it, the more I realized how pertinent to life the principles of the foam roller are. Here are a few lessons I learned today while stretching.

Follow Through and Finish Strong

Ask any Olympic sprinter what they visualize when they line up in the blocks and they won’t say they look at the finish line; they look past it. While the second place finisher often leans to reach the finish line, the winner runs through the finish line because champions know the finish line isn’t the end because they have a victory lap to run. Look at great NBA hall of fame caliber shooters like Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant, and Reggie Miller. We watch countless highlights of those guys holding their hands in the air after a big game winning shot. They had great shots with an even better follow through.

The common factor that makes these champions great is the follow through. They finish strong, they exceed what they “have to” do. When I first got into endurance sports I thought just doing my running workout was “enough.” I’d come home and crash, telling myself “I’ll stretch later.” In doing so, I was sorer than ever, recovered a lot slower, and was far more injury prone. Why? Because I was just doing “enough,” I was getting to the end of the workout, but not following through. Overtime, I learned that not only was stretching important, it was VITAL if I wanted to be an elite triathlete. Taking care of my body allows it to function properly and effectively. Those 15 extra minutes after a workout on the foam roller, doing what others don’t, has helped my recovery time improve and overall helped my performance tremendously.

The same goes with you and your job, your schoolwork, your relationships, and friendships. The best friends are those that follow through on what they say they’re going to do. The best employees (and those that ultimately advance in their careers) are those that finish strong; those that stay late to finish a project; those that help others around them; the dependable people. Following through in any aspect of life is a sure fire way to succeed.

Prevention is better than Rehab

After pulling a hamstring last year and having to rehab from that, stretching is now even more important because I learned a valuable lesson. The time you spend having to rehab and get “back to square one” is time that could be spent getting you better in the first place. Obviously there are injuries that can happen, but doing your part to prevent them is the best way to get ahead. The time I spent last year rehabbing a leg injury and constant soreness is now spent improving my mile times, getting stronger on the bike, and working on my swim stroke. The difference is that I now understand that taking those few extra minutes to stretch and massage myself on the foam roller after workout, is keeping my body healthy and fresh so that I can demand more out of it in my workouts and races.

In any area of your life, prevention is better than “fixing it.” My football coach in college used to say, “Do it right, do it light, do it wrong, do it long.” What he meant was that when you do things correctly and do things right, you get more efficient results, aka when you prepare well, you have better results. When you do it wrong, when you fail to prepare, when you fail to put yourself in a winning situation (such as not stretching), you make life harder on yourself. You might have thought you were busy before, but having to overcome the setback that could have been avoided only adds to the difficulty in reaching your goal.

Surround yourself with Tools and people that help you Improve

I use to just “stretch” when I finally started stretching. After talking to various runners and triathletes, I learned that foam roller helped people recover a lot better and quicker than just stretching alone. I’m one of those weird people that reads every review on the Internet before I adopt something new into my routine or work. When I looked at the foam roller by Pro-Tec Athletics, what impressed me was that their mission wasn’t so much about the products, but about providing people with correct INFORMATION on injury and injury prevention. In a world full of companies just trying to sell products, it refreshing to see one that cares about the customers having knowledge of what they’re buying and how it benefits them.

We all have 24 hours in a day; we must find ways to maximize our time if we want to be great. The best way to do so is to surround yourself with people that are moving forward. Surround yourself with people that look at the world and ask the question, “how can we make it better?”

That positive outlook and mindset is contagious. When enough people come together and adapt that mindset, we can change the world.

Baylor

Here’s a live version of a verse I wrote and performed last year for a buddy going through Drug Rehab. However, we all have our vices, so I believe Everyone can relate.

Verse 1 – Baylor

Got Monsters in My Mind that Tell Me I should Doubt Myself

Monters in my Pride that Tell me I astound Myself

Seen a lot ofFakes and a couple good Imposters

These voices in my head ain’t voices they Monsters

Ego Got Me Starstruck, Demons got me wanting More

Love says it’ll be ok, but Lust got me chasing Wh*res

It’s a war and i’m feeling like I can’t win

balance out the Lows with this High, I stay above the Rim

But I aint ballin, Waitin on the Angel Calling

No Clarity in My Mind with all the Voices Talking

They always tell me Go Left, Still i’m trying to do Right

Running from my own demise, yea, i’m racing through life

Wolves in sheep’s clothing as friends, but they posin’ on me

Hiding from the Karma of My Past But It’s closing on Me

Dark thoughts in my Head, You really want a piece of Mine?

My Life’s shattered into every piece except for peace of Mind

“For in the same manner you judge others, you will be judged.”
- Matthew 7:2

It’s Super Bowl week, Ravens vs. 49ers…two elite championship teams, so what do we focus on? Do we focus on the hard work and journey each team took this season to get there? Do we focus on the AFC and NFC championship games from a week ago?

No. Now all of the sudden, everyone is vehemently against Ray Lewis for an incident that happened over a decade ago. Now all of the sudden he’s a “murderer?” Though he never went to Trial, was never even charged with murder? But in the eyes of the public, he’s still a murderer who’s an evil human being?

Before you start pointing at Ray Lewis, think about a few things.

First, ironically it’s the fellow “Christians” who seem to be pointing fingers the most and condemning Ray the hardest, which sickens me. However, since you are perfect and can indeed throw the first stone, let’s look at some facts.

A man commits adultery. He then gets the lady pregnant and sends her husband to be killed in War to cover up his sins. If that happened today, we would be talking about this man in the news. However, God said this man is a “man after his own heart.” Consequently, today we all love the Psalms of David.

He was actually guilty, but we look at all the good he did right? But not Ray?

Situation Two. A man hates Christians. He goes town to town, city to city, literally pulling Christians out of homes and churches and watching them be murdered for being Christian. If that happened today, we would go to war with that “Terrorist.” However, that man Saul, Who became Paul, is the largest contributor to the New Testament that we love and read today.

Paul was admittedly Guilty, but we focus on all the good he did right? But Not Ray?

Why is Ray, who wasn’t even tried, much less proven guilty, not admired for how he’s turned his life around since being in the wrong place at the wrong time? Why do we label Ray a hypocrite for his Faith and outspokenness about his faith? We’re mad because he turned his life around and is using his second chance to spread God’s word?

Since when did this become a bad thing? Since when did we start looking at pasts, creating our own details of events that didn’t involve us, and ignore a person’s good deeds? I know plenty of people in worse conditions, who still don’t hear the Voice of God or change their ways, why can’t we celebrate someone who does? Why do we ignore all the of the charities and causes Ray Stands for, or the fact he has been a beacon of what an athlete should be both on and off the field since that day? What happened to supporting fellow Christians? What happened to letting God be the Judge?

If the Ravens weren’t in the Super Bowl, Ray’s past wouldn’t even be in the media. However, since Ray has overcome tremendous odds, came back in the same season from a torn TRICEP, led his team to a Super Bowl in his last game…we Try and verbally crucify him?

Remember what happened the Last time an innocent Man was crucified?

Maybe Ray’s Incident 13 years ago isn’t what you hate. Maybe you hate the fact that Ray made a mistake, turned His life around and became a tool for God’s Plan just like David and Paul…. and you continue to sit there and do nothing.

Most of the country watched part 1 last night of the Lance Armstrong Interview with Oprah. Before the interview we knew he was going to come clean. In case you missed it, Oprah asked him some very direct and difficult questions that he answered Truthfully. I was chastised for saying I applauded Lance for coming clean and doing so very publicly. There are many people who go to their graves hiding lies, with far less to lose than Lance.

Yes, he lied. Yes he used performance-enhancing drugs. Yes he hurt a lot of people and bullied many others. I’m not condoning his actions; he isn’t either. What I am here to discuss is the lessons we can all learn from Lance’s mistakes.

Are one man’s Sins worse than another?

Social Media, Talk Shows, and Radio Shows were filled with people hurling insults at Lance. He’s terrible, he did this, he did that, etc. At a certain Point, I think it was no longer about what Lance Actually Did, but rather give people an opportunity to point a finger at another human in an effort to justify their own flaws and wrongdoings. I heard so many “at least I’d never do that to someone.” Maybe you wouldn’t, but does that justify your sins? On top of that, in God’s eyes (the One who will judge us all), is one sin worse than the next? God never put a degree on sin and wrongdoings, we did. The harder you look at Lance and judge Him, the harder you’re making it on yourself to make it to heaven because by the same measure you use to judge others, you to will be judged. Do you want your life judged with the same magnifying glass and scrutiny as you’re judging Lance? If your life was under a microscope don’t you think the public would find some sins, schemes, or wrongdoings in your life? There are skeletons in everyone’s closet.

Little Lies go Viral

We live in a world of Virality. YouTube views create stars overnight, small stories blow up to national media sensations seemingly overnight. Things with substance go viral. We can learn from Lance that lies do the same. A small lie to defend himself against doping accusations that everyone else was doing as well, nearly 20 years ago, all turned into this. When lance first doped and denied it do you think he knew he’d turn into a household name one day, that he’d raise half a billion dollars for cancer research and inspire millions of people? Probably not. We can all learn from that. The smallest lie, even with the best intention, can spiral out of control and get you caught in a web of lies in deceit. Don’t let it be you.

Peace in Truth

Lance may never be trusted again. He may never be able to fix his image, but there is a certain peace that only truth brings. He’s made hundreds of millions of dollars, won some of the world’s hardest races, dated Stars, was a huge inspiration, had huge endorsement deals, and if you heard him last night what did you hear? He said, I am happier NOW than I’ve ever been. This is coming off getting booed everywhere he goes in his home town, having lost 75 million dollars in a day and probably bringing forth a litany of lawsuits on himself. He’s lost all credibility, but is Happier NOW than he ever was. That’s because Truth brings peace. It doesn’t erase all he’s done, he still has his work cut out for him, but we could all use some of that truth Serum in our lives. It takes a big man to own up to his shortcomings, most would rather hide behind the lie.

Why Don’t We Pray

I see plenty of people demeaning Lance, Kicking him while he’s down, throwing Scripture AT him and showing why what he did is wrong biblically, etc. But what I Don’t see from my fellow Christians, is anyone reaching out to Lance and saying, hey Let’s pray for you. I don’t see anyone praying that he changes, or praying that he’s strong enough to deal with the uphill battle he’s going to face. No one prays for his recovery or his turmoil. He admitted he was flawed, as we all our, yet no one seems to pray for his Soul. Is that right?

Did Jesus berate people that were down or had sinned? If I recall, He helped those people. Are we not supposed to live in His image and do the same?

Maybe instead of Looking at Lance and labeling him a Monster, We should all look at the one in the Mirror.

“You have to go to God with Positive Expectations and know there is no limit to what He can Accomplish.” – Brittney Hemberger

Happy New Year.

Here we are a week into 2013 and by now you may or may not have already forgotten about all of those “resolutions” you said you were going to do to start the year. I’m not a believer in resolutions because I don’t feel that you should have to wait until a certain day to start changing your life around, however, I do like goals. I believe everyone should have something that they strive for, something they shoot for.

I have big aspirations myself, but I often like to hear what other people’s goals are. I like to surround myself with people that have huge goals and want to do epic things because it helps keep us all accountable and motivated. That’s a large reason Rehab Time succeeds is that we have lofty goals, expectations, and standards.

Of the countless people I’ve asked “what’s one of your big goals for the year,” 90 percent have said something that has to do with health, “aka lose weight,” or something that has to do with money, “ aka make X amount of dollars.”

Both of those are good goals to shoot for, but what I heard today, not only stopped me in my tracks, it changed my perspective on a lot of my own “goals.”

I take pride in trying to do the right thing, live the right way, and help people to better their lives and outlooks on life. I have some lofty goals and expectations which until today “assumed” we’re “great goals.” I was chatting with an extremely great-hearted friend of mine, Brittney Hemberger, in an uber early morning chat today and filled her in on some of the things I’m working on, Rehab Time is working on, goals, etc. and casually asked her “What’s one of your big goals for this year?”

Her answer made my jaw drop, literally.

Her response, verbatim was “Honestly? For my heart to see people the way God sees them. For my heart to be broken for the lost & unable.. Or for the able who day in & day out repeatedly live daily routine self-centered lives. Whether that’s through prayer, fitness, my job.. I don’t know. But I know God has that all figured out. I want to live out my purpose..whatever it is. & I want it to be practiced & perfected everyday..not just when I get a motivational kick or my heart gets tugged a lil harder one day.”

I just sat there, humbled. How GENUINE is that? If you’re like me, you immediately start looking at your own goals and think, “man I’m selfish,” right?

Here I am over thinking “a goal to help people” is a great goal, or hitting the Forbes list so I can help more people, is a great goal (which there’s nothing wrong with,) but, Brittney’s goal, is the essence of what ALL of our goals should be.

You see, as people, WE (not God) place emphasis on levels. We have certain financial levels we want to hit, certain metrics we want to hit at our jobs; we’re consumed with how many of this we can get or how much of that we have. We judge others based on their “degree” of sin, “Oh that’s worse than that, etc.”

But where does God talk about levels of anything? He doesn’t. That’s because Jesus came to the earth preaching two things, Love and Relationships. Love God. Love your neighbor. Simple. Yet we make it difficult. God doesn’t care how much money you make or what the title on your business card says. Though it’s good to be healthy, ultimately, God doesn’t care if you have 6-pack abs or the perfect Beach body.

God DOES care about how you treat others. We were made in His image so He cares how we view others. You may not like someone but guess what, they were created in His image, JUST LIKE YOU. He wants us to step outside ourselves and put others first, always.

God put us here to glorify Him. He gave all of us unique talents and abilities, so that we can all use our separate talents to glorify Him. The best way to fulfil His purpose for your life is to see the World as He sees it, to treat others as He would treat them.

You may have your individual, worldly goals, as do we all, but today take some time out to look at your goals. Ask yourself this question, “does my goal really help fulfil God’s purpose for my life, or does it fulfill a selfish desire?” The answer to that question will most likely tell you if you’ll achieve your goal or not.

Live a life that counts today!

You’ve no doubt seen one of our Shirts at Rehab Time, whether it’s “See My Heart Not My Past,” “I’m what hard work looks like,” or the multitude of other shirts that we offer. If you know me, you know I Find inspiration from a lot of things, but lately, I’ve become increasingly inspired by Kennith Smith, owner of DFW Designer Tee’s where the Rehab Time shirts are printed, Right here in the USA.

Kennith serves as model of how I think all of us should approach our business, work, and anything professional. That is with diehard commitment to be the best. It doesn’t matter if you’re an NFL athlete, if you’re a lawyer, printing shirts, a secretary, a zookeeper, or any other career, you should treat your job like it is the absolute most important thing in the world, and do everything you can to be best.

Here’s a few things I’ve learned from Kennith that we should all apply to our lives and careers.

Take Offense to someone thinking they are better than you

If you truly value your craft, and you’re working to be the best, you should abhor the fact that anyone say they are better than you. It has to mean that much too you if you truly want to be successful. Someone sent Kennith a video claiming to be the “best screen printer” and He went off. That’s a valuable trait. You have to have a unquenchable thirst and passion to be the best and others should see it in you without you saying anything. Work to be the best, be the best, and defend your territory at the top.

Nice Guys finish last, be mean

This does not literally be mean. What it means is to be aggressive in pursuing dominance in your craft. Ray Lewis once said, “You have to be pissed off for greatness.” That’s what it takes to reach the top. You have have a “I will do what it takes to win, even if it kills me” type of focus and passion for what you do. Be assertive, be persistent, win.

Take Pride in your Work

Kennith and the great staff at DFW Designer Tees take pride in their work. A lot of pride. When I’m able to go by the shop to see the New Rehab Time shirts being printed I’m always amazed to see each shirt being checked for quality, EACH SHIRT. These are high volume shirts and they treat each client, no matter if its 10 shirts or 10,000 with same respect and quality control. They do it because the product they put out, Represents them. Even though the shirts doesn’t say DFW Designer Tee, the staff knows it’s their work and therefore they stand by their quality. Do you take that kind of pride in your work? You should!

Go the Extra Mile

The extra mile is the least crowded because very few go there. Kennith and company go there. Most screen printers “just print.” Not Kennith. Several Times we’ll send Kennith a Design and rather than just print it, he finds ways to improve our design to make it the BEST. Not because he gets paid to that, but because he believes in making everything that leaves the shop, the BEST it can be. He could have charged us an arm and a leg and after seeing his work, he’d deserve it, but he doesn’t do it for notoriety, money, or anything like that, he does it because going the extra mile is what sets him apart, it’s the reason that DFW Designer Tees is the #1 printshop in the Metroplex and beyond.

Give Back

Not for cameras, not to say “look at me, I’m giving back,” but truly give back because that’s what we’re called to do. The ultimate sign of a Christian is how you give and how you live. At Rehab Time we’ve been fortunate to be in front of a lot cameras and been credited with a lot of things, which we are thankful for. However, the true heroes, like Kennith, are those that you never know do so much for the Community. Over the past few years, Kennith and DFW Designer Tees have donated “at least” thousands of hoodies, sweatshirts, tshirts, gloves and all kinds of things for our Warm the Homeless drives and countless other initiatives that we do in the community to help out. He thought the homeless deserved fresh new apparel too, not just “hand me downs.” And do you think the quality of print was any less, or the shirt or sweatshirt material was cheaper because they were “donated?” Not at all. It was the exact quality of shirts you find us wearing. Did he do it to say “look at me?” Nope. Did he do it as a promo for the shop? Nope. As a matter of fact, you won’t even find him or his staff in any of the pictures of our drives even though they are out there handing out shirts and sweaters in the blistering cold weather with us. He’ll probably be upset I even posted this if he reads it Because he didn’t do it for the cameras, he did it because he had an opportunity to use his God given ability to help other people.

And that’s something we can all learn from.

Go out and pursue excellence in anything you do!

After a year filled with Triathlons and running events, I decided to end the 2012 race season this past Sunday with a Full Marathon. If you’ve ever ran a full marathon, I salute you, if you haven’t, I’ll tell you some things I learned in the 26.2 mile race that literally seemed to cover all of Dallas. You’d be surprised how many parallels to life there are in the marathon.

When I announced I would be running in the race, I heard every excuse in the world from people around me. “Dude humans aren’t supposed to run that far,” “Aren’t you kind of big too be running a marathon,” etc. Coming off triathlon season, which consists of swimming, biking, and running, I first looked at a marathon training plan, to see if it could help me in the approximate month I had to train for the 26.2 mile distance.

Every training plan I saw took from “4 months for those that were in amazing shape,” up to 14 months for those that had a dream of completing a marathon. Nowhere was there a “1 month plan,” in fact many sites and plans say if you don’t have at least 4 months of training exclusively for the marathon, don’t attempt it because you won’t make it. But guess what? In the marathon, as in life, just because People say you can’t do it, doesn’t mean you can’t.

The longest distance race I had ran was a half marathon, 13.1 miles. The training plans all recommend you work up and run a 18-20 mile long run so that you can “know how it feels,” to run that far. I don’t think it takes a genius to realize that it probably feels terrible. So I ignored that, and I ignored those that said you can’t do a marathon without training for half a year. Instead I focused on nutrition and prayer. I figured if the bible says, with the faith of a mustard seed you can tell a mountain to jump in the ocean and it will be done, then merely completing a marathon will be a piece of cake.

If you listen to what everyone says you can’t do, you won’t accomplish much in life. You have to listen to that part of yourself that says, regardless of the odds, I know I can do this. I could have given myself every excuse in the world from “I’m 225 lbs., vs. these 140 lb. runners, I have to work harder;” or “it’s not fair” due to bruised and cracked ribs I suffered from a bike crash, or a myriad of other things. But, I focused on what I WANTED TO DO, not what could prevent me from doing that.

My philosophy was simple, this was not a 26.2 mile race; this was 26 individual races, with a .2 mile victory lap at the end. Too often in life, we try to “do it all at once” and fail to realize that success in life comes down to mastering the task at hand, the mile at hand. I can’t think about mile 22 when I’m on mile 5. I have to think about reaching mile 6. Every mile marker I crossed, my new goal became, run to the next mile marker. When I got to the next one, my new goal was do my best to run to the next mile marker. I do the same in life, one mile marker to the next, knowing I’m on the right path to get to my destination.

They say never to judge a book by its cover, and that couldn’t be more true in the Marathon. Before the race, we all kind of look around and think “ok well I’ll for sure beat that guy or girl,” or “hmm that person looks like they may win the thing.” But, in the marathon, as in life, appearances are deceiving. I can’t tell you how many “in uber great shape” people I passed on the side of the road who were laying in the grass throwing up or stretching or walking away having just quit. On the flip side, I can’t tell you how many “I’ll for sure beat that person” type people passed me and I never saw them again.

The point is, we often judge people but we don’t know their circumstances. They may look like an elite athlete, but they may not be in cardio shape. Someone may look fat and slow, but they may running 30 miles a day and are ready to whoop you in a race. In life, we often admire celebrities and people we “think” are rich and famous, but fail to realize most of them are broke putting on a façade for the cameras. Trust me, you wouldn’t want their life. Then we look at others and think they haven’t amounted to anything, but fail to realize the true wealthy people in the world, don’t feel the need to flaunt it, they’re past that. Warren Buffett, uber billionaire, still drives a ford pickup and lives in the same 3 bedroom house he’s always lived in. You wouldn’t know he was that rich if you judged the book by its cover.

As some of these older folks ran by me, the people I “KNEW” before the race that I would beat, I asked myself, how is it that they are successful runners. The answer is, consistency. They didn’t move very fast, but they run at the same exact consistent pace the entire race. In life, you probably know someone like that. Someone who wasn’t the most talented person in the world, but they got up every morning, and attacked whatever they did with the same consistent pace, day in and day out. One day they look up and they’ve “Made it” and the rest of us are scratching our heads wondering how? Life is long, slow and steady definitely wins the race.

About mile 8 I learned another valuable lesson. In the marathon, the full and half marathon people start together, all 25,000 of us. Of course that makes for some crowded streets. Around mile 7 or 8, there is a cutoff, that’s where the half marathoners (who I’m taking nothing away from because that’s a feat in itself) turn around and the full marathoners continue on. What I learned is, the road of life is never crowded when you go “the extra mile.” At the cutoff it went from super packed streets, to wide open streets. Why is that? Because not everyone is willing to or can go the extra mile.

If you have clutter in your life, or you feel swamped, go the extra mile. Do you feel crowded and can’t get a moment to yourself? Go the extra mile. The reason it’s lonely at the top is that very few are willing to travel the road it takes to get there. Are you willing?

Finally, the main reason I chose to run the marathon THIS YEAR, instead “one day” like so many people say, was a) to say I’ve done it, but more importantly b) to challenge the greatest opponent I’ve ever faced. No I’m not talking about the 25,000 other runners, I’m not talking about the distance, I’m talking about me. At the end of the day, no matter who you are or what you’re doing, you are your only opponent. It’s never about anyone else. Most people lose to themselves on a daily basis when there is any adversity.

In the marathon, it’s known that at some point, usually around mile 18-21, you hit The Wall. That’s the point in the race where the whole race takes its toll on you, your legs lock up, your body feels terrible, and you truly learn what you’re made of. Instead of fearing that wall, I went in to the race looking forward to finding that wall, looking forward to battling “me.”

I told myself before the race that it was a two entity race. It was me vs. the voice of doubt. Baylor Barbee vs. the voice that says, you’re tired, you’re hurting, you can’t go another step.” You’ve undoubtedly heard that voice in your life too. I didn’t just want to “win,” this was a death match. Somebody, whether it be me or that “you should quit” voice, had to die in that race. We could no longer coexist. You should have that same attitude in your life. You can’t coexist with that voice that tells you that you can’t accomplish something. If you merely just beat that voice all the time, it’s still there. So it has to die. You have to kill it so that you can live a life of “I can” not a life of “maybe I can’t.”

So I set out to kill that voice. The funny thing about life is this; we all have that voice that tells us “quit, you can’t do this” and most listen to it. But what most don’t realize if you keep running forward in life, that voice that says “you’re tired, you should quit,” gets tired and quits on you. Yea, think about that. Same goes with naysayers in your life. At a certain point of doubting you and saying you can’t, they get tired and quit doubting you because they realize you can’t be stopped when you’re focused and passionate about reaching a goal or a finish line.

Early in the race that voice said “you realize you still have more than 20 miles to go and that bridge you just ran up took a lot out of really early in the race.” At mile 8 it said “You should have just signed up for the half like everyone else so you could be mostly done now, but you’re not even a 1/3 of the way yet.” At Mile 10 it said, “it’s almost 70 degrees, that’s extremely hot for this distance and you’re 6’4 225 lbs., you’re going to get dehydrated and your kidneys are going to shut off, you could die.” At mile 14 it said “you’ve ran further than you’ve ever run at one time, and you’re still 12.2 miles away, you should call this a moral victory and quit here.”

I kept my head down and kept running. I was fatigued. Remember, I told you I spent a lot of time praying for this race. God answers prayers, and He always answers them at the right time. During mile 13 when I really started feeling the effects of the hills I had been running and the heat, I See a car pull up, and my sister hopped out. Her and my brother had been looking for me, it was a breath of fresh air, a definite blessing. She ran along with me for at least 11 miles, my brother ran along some, and would then drive to another spot to have hydration and nutrition stuff for me. Both were totally unexpected, but most blessings are.

(as you can see my brother and sister are clearly enjoying this race more than me)

If you tune out the “I can’t” voice, God will always supply you with what you need so that You CAN. Seeing my family there gave me a second wind, yea I CAN DO THIS.

Most of us get to that point, but it’s that second wave of “I can’t” that usually defeats most people.

I was feeling good again, sister running with me encouraging me, and then I hit mile 16. That’s when it got real, so to speak. It was hot, it was humid because I was running around the lake, and my whole body was starting to lock up. That voice said “your feet are burning, your calves hurt, you might have pulled your groin, your legs are heavy, you should stop, you could die,” I kept running. Then it said “Look WAYYYY off in the distance, you see those skyscrapers downtown, that’s where you have to get too, that’s more than 10 miles away, You’ll NEVER MAKE IT.”

In life, we have goals, but sometimes, we have to alter our strategy. Notice, I didn’t say alter our goal, never that, you should always at least get to the goal you set out to get. Notice I didn’t say alter your route or your plan, too many do that and deviate from where they were trying to go, I said alter your strategy. Break it down. Early in the race the goal was to make it to the next mile marker, every time until there were no more mile markers.

I had to change it, it wasn’t make it to mile 18, it was “make it to that tree right there, ok good you made it” now “make it to that rock up there” good you made it. I broke it down, same path, same course, same direction toward the goal, with mini goals in mind to help me reach the big one. For the next 6-7 miles that voice tried to tell me to quit, but I noticed something. About mile 20, that voice started getting less frequent. It stopped trying too hard to tell me I couldn’t. It started to seem that the voice that was telling me to quit, was running out of steam, and was ready to quit itself. By mile 24, I knew I had that voice on the ropes. There was a faint effort by that voice as it gave its last “please quit,” it didn’t have the strength anymore to tell me to quit, and I was too close.

Your life is the same. If you keep going, that voice WILL quit, and you will be successful. I hit mile 25, and that voice of doubt quit. It died. Knock out. Game over. I knew I had 1.2 miles to go and I picked up my pace. I forgot about the my legs feeling dead, I forgot about my back and my shoulders being tight, I forgot about the blisters on my feet because that voice that said “I can’t” was no longer there.

I noticed I was running through a beautiful city. I noticed the skyscrapers were really tall and it was a beautiful day outside. I heard the crowd, I thought about how blessed I was to be able to live in a country where I can run freely on a Sunday morning and not have a care in the world. I thought about how prayer works and God fulfilled that prayer request to do this race and all of the support via blessings He gave me across the last few hours to ensure that I did it.

I heard my mom half a mile away holding her “Johnny Football can’t run a marathon” sign (relax aggies, it’s a joke) and I heard the crowd at the finish line cheering as I came down the home stretch and finished.

Whatever you set out to do in life, let nothing stop you from getting there.

Have you ever read someone’s story and just been blown away? That happened to me today. It was further proof that God is a master architect of our lives and if we keep living right and stay on the path He has for us, He will surround us with people that will inspire us and lift us up as well.

Obviously, I’m a big fan of OXYwater, as it’s helped me tremendously in the Triathlons I cna compete in and training for upcoming marathons. Through it, I met a friend Charlene who is an OXYwater sponsored Athlete. For a few months, I’ve seen pics from her workouts, and physique posters and such, she’s definitely as in shape as a person can be in, but I’ve never really got a chance to get to know her.

She has a poster that says “Do you remember the girl that gave up? Yea no one else does either,” which I’ve always liked. I assumed she was just a girl who valued her health and fitness and took care of herself….

And today, I found out the full story. I saw a model picture of her with a caption that said “I beat cancer too.” Wait, what? Most of us when we think of cancer survivor, we think of bald, frailer looking, survivors….not toned, tanned, long flowing hair beautiful individuals.

I had to find out more.

If you’re reading this on my site then pause briefly and look up at the top right now and look at my mantra “Achieve the Impossible.”

That’s what Charlene did. See some of us as athletes have “good” stories. For instance, I shattered my ankle in my last high school football game, played 3 basketball games on it before getting it fixed and went on to get an athletic scholarship to play division one football in the BIG XII despite being from a small town. That’s a “good story” with “tough odds.”

Charlene, on the other hand, had insurmountable odds. Things in life that make most people quit. To start with, she lost her father at age 5. That’s tough for anyone. It didn’t stop there, her family’s home flooded 2 years later. Two horrific things in 2 years….

And then it got worse.

At age Nine she was diagnosed with Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia. A quick side note to tell you how severe ALL is, I had a friend get diagnosed with it, and passed away a few days later.

Cancer destroys bodies. She endured that all that by age 9, all the reason in the world to say “Life didn’t hand me perfect cards, so I quit, right?” So many people quit on life under far less negative circumstances. Not Charlene. She endured chemo, which you can only imagine how hard it is on a child, beat cancer, grew her hair back, had to learn to walk (again) and lived to tell about it.

When I read that, first of all, I was thankful that I haven’t had to overcome those obstacles (and you should be thankful too). And then I realized, if another human, that’s just like me, can not only survive those travesties, but prosper after, then what’s my excuse?

You should ask yourself the same.

We live in a land of opportunity, but rather than see it and capitalize on it, we look at everyone else who “has it so much easier,” woe is me, right? Have you ever stopped to think, that not everyone has it easier, that maybe they just worked harder than you?

Everyday I counsel people who tell me “it’s hard being at square one, when everyone else is so much further ahead.” It’s hard being at square one, yea, but what about the people like Charlene that started BEHIND square one, and didn’t let that affect them, that chose not to see the “Misfortune” in their lives, but rather the fortune of opportunity those circumstances provided them with? Shouldn’t we be thankful for our situations, and thankful we don’t have the next person’s problems? Charlene is an inspiration to all on what you can do if you have faith, and stay committed to a plan, you can beat any odds.

You can achieve the impossible if you don’t allow yourself to be a “victim” of life. When you see Charlene on stage competing in the physique competition at the coveted Arnold Fitness Expo next year, you’d have no idea that she was a cancer “victim.” Because she didn’t allow herself to be a victim, she trained her mind and body to use that hurdle as a stepping stone and not a step back.

So what are you waiting for? Thank God for your current situation no matter how bad or good it is, and know that God is going to help you use it for His honor and your benefit….and go out and conquer what you once thought was impossible.

You’ve seen it everywhere, proudly displayed on t-shirts of Pro-bowl athletes, real world celebrities, all the way to Orphans in Africa; from wristbands to a sure soon to be best-selling book….I’m talking about “See My Heart not My Past.” Everyone loves it, but we always get asked “what does it mean?”

Before you can delve into what it means, you have to know where it came from. I think life and people should be treated that way, too often we rush to conclusions and assumptions on people because they do things differently, without stopping to see what influences they had that made them the way they are.

A lot of people think that Rehab Time and “See My Heart” was some mastermind plan with a huge marketing budget and a PR Firm spinning it to make it popular. That couldn’t be further from the Truth. Everything about See My Heart Not My Past and Rehab Time is a testament to God and the blessings and doors He will open if you live right.

Three years ago today we launched “RehabTime.org” but even then we never knew it would turn into this. Our Goal was not to get hundreds of Thousands of Social Media Followers and grace famed shows like TBN, walk red carpets, sell best-selling books or any of that, our goal was this….be authentic, live right. We were heavy into music (and still are) but we were making the wrong kind of music, and were wildly successful at it, but something was missing. Trent and I both felt the voice that I’m sure many of you hear that says “This is wrong, change your ways.”

You can ignore it as long as you want, but it won’t leave. One day we made a conscious decision to change for the better. No demeaning women in songs, no rap facades, just truth, just be us. People flocked to it. We would do ustream videos and just be honest with people who assumed our lives were fairytales because we performed music in front of thousands of people and Trent was in the NFL. By being honest, especially in rap, would almost certaintly be deemed career suicide. I Never would have thought what the world needed was honesty, when everything in the world says “lie” and “fake it tiil you make it” to get ahead. But we did. And people loved it.

One day I made a beat and sent it to Trent and he recorded to it and sent it back. You can listen to it here.

Around the 1 minute mark you hear the line “Please see my heart, baby girl not my past.” A great line yes, but everything he was writing then was great too. A few months later I was listening to the song, while going through a tough breakup of 4 years and that line, though I had heard the song dozens of times, jumped out at me.

I told Trent, man there’s something about that line. He, was dealing with his own situations, and I guess at that time, while we were both at low’s in life….it really struck a chord with us. (Funny how God’s timing is perfect, He orchestrated that wonderfully) So we made a shirt.

I think we printed a few; it wasn’t a grand scheme to sell the thousands of shirts that are out there today, it wasn’t even for sale. It was just a few people, who had changed their ways, and wanted people we had hurt or who knew us when we were more on the “self-centered, conceited” side, to see us for who we are not who we were.

This is where faith comes in. We started living the right way, and God opened people’s eyes, ears, and hearts to what we were doing. “See My Heart Not my Past” Struck a chord with everyone because most of us have someone we’ve lost or were different in our past and want to be seen for who we are, we’ve all made mistakes. Or some of us were something great before, and those days have passed and we want to be seen as a person not an icon or idol. Whatever the reason may be, we all want to be seen for who we are not what or who we were.

We started speaking from the heart, in person, on social media etc. God opened people’s hearts to it. They say too be successful, if you do the opposite of everyone else, you’ll usually be successful. The more negative the world was, the more positive we became. The more the world drank and partied, the more we focused on improving ourselves and situations. I’m not saying we were or are angels, we all fall short of the glory of God, but we did and still do everything in our power to progress daily. God sees your heart, He knows your motives. We started writing books, literally us, no ghost writers, no publishing houses, just Me, Trent, and Microsoft Word. We had no formal speaking training, didn’t even bother to read up on “how you should write a book,” because we knew one thing was for certain. The Truth is the Truth always. People might not like the Truth, but they need it, and they want it.

Over these three years it’s blown up to what it is now. Ironically, life is cyclical. People now think “Oh you have it easy, you get to write books and speak for a living,” but they don’t see the hard work that goes into this. They see your books and merchandise everywhere, but they don’t see the late night meetings and calls we have til 4 am as we figure out what we can do to truly help people change their lives. People see the Workouts are effective, but they don’t see the cold winters and hot summer days we spent creating these workouts and all the crazy things such as doing workouts on broken escalators to see if there was something that could be created that could maximize time and efficiency in a workout. People see Rehab Time on TV and News and think it’s all fun and games because we do it with a smile, but they don’t see the Death threat emails you get from mad guys because you open girls eyes up to how they are being mistreated. People see the thousands of followers on twitter and Facebook, but they don’t’ see the messages and sneak disses of people calling you a devil worshipper because you believe that being positive is a bad thing or the setups from females who try and bait you into not being who you say you are.

In fact, the funny thing is, people think if they copy what you say, then they can get to where you at. But here’s why it will never work, they don’t LIVE IT. Rehab Time succeeds and will continue to flourish because it’s in our DNA, it’s who we are, and we live by that creed and standard we encourage others to live by. No matter what you’re trying to do, if it’s not who you really are, people will see through it. You may gain followers for saying cool quotes, but you’ll lose them just as fast when they see the façade. We do it because it’s right, not because it makes you popular. If I had 10 followers instead of 67,000 I’d still be tweeting the same positive and faith based tweets. Because I’m not in it to get popular. I’m in it to hopefully change one live, every day, and bring one more person closer to God.

People that used to be with us and started their own “Christian Motivation” companies ask us how we “get so many followers.” I shake my head every time, because they are missing the point. Life is about living out God’s will for you, aka your purpose, it’s not about popularity. The same people that put you on a pedestal, will be the ones throwing stones to knock you off of it, so why focus on that? We focus on putting out quality material that can change our lives, our loved ones lives, and those who want to better their lives, and in turn create a culture that will outlive Myself, Trent, or anyone reading this blog now.

To be great, you have to fight the urge to be great. You have to give your best to TODAY, and TODAY only. Every time the calendar says “today,” you have to give your best, and that’s what we do. We do it because it’s what we’re called to do, not because of the status it gives you. If It were about popularity, Vincent Van Gogh wouldn’t have kept painting. He only sold one painting during his life, to a family member who felt sorry for him. But Vincent Van Gogh didn’t paint to be popular, He painted because that was the gift God gave Him and He honored God by utilizing it. He’ll never know it, but his work is now in the most famous museums and palaces in the world and each piece sells for millions of dollars. His purpose was bigger than popularity.

It truly has to be in you. Every second of every day. See My Heart and Not My past is in me, everyday; rehab time is in me every day. There’s no on/off switch. It affects my choices when I eat, it affects how hard I work out, and how I handle situations and people in my business dealings.

When you live right and commit to a cause, not for fame, not for money, but because it’s your Purpose and you’re doing God’s work, God opens doors, HUGE DOORS. Doors you could never have fathomed if you tried to “plan.” I’m all for setting a direction to go, but I laugh when people “plan out everything.” To me, that’s belittling what God can do for your life. We lived right and God started bringing people into our lives who are truly as committed as us and the Rehab Time Team grew. I could talk for Days about the blessings and doors God has opened for us because we do His work, but there’s not enough ink in a print cartridge for you to print it out and read it. Just by listening and doing what God asks us to do, we’ve been able to reach people worldwide, be seen and heard by millions of people, speak at Fortune 500 companies, help kids, prevent suicides, save marriages, and all kinds of things….not because we were Preachers or Saints, in fact, on paper, we were the opposite. We were NFL/Hip-Hop artists, pushing the party agenda, I was as cocky as cocky could be, Trent has dread locks and sleeve tattoos….not exactly who you’d “expect” to come to your school or church and deliver a message.

But that’s what’s great about God. He doesn’t care about worldly stereotypes. He doesn’t care what Saul did, He cared about how Paul could use his story to help people. He didn’t hold it against Baylor Barbee that he ruined a relationship with a wonderful Girl because I cared more about myself, money, and notoriety than the relationship…God cared that I could use my wrongdoings to help prevent others from making my mistakes. God didn’t care that Trent Shelton had the premier nightlife event and party company in the metroplex or that we made “worldly music” that people could drink and party too….He cared that people would listen to Trent because of his appearance, and speak the words that God Put on his Heart….

Do you get it? God doesn’t see Pasts, He See’s Hearts. Don’t you think you should do the same?

See My Heart Not My Past Forever.

When we’re growing up, most of have visions of changing the world, of being that super hero. As we grow older, we’re faced with real world problems, stresses, and other issues and our mindset change from “change the world” to “save myself.” News is depressing, and it always seems like everyone is doing better than we are doing, so somewhere along the way, most of us start feeling insignificant and that there’s nothing we can do to change the world.

I, myself, used to think that “once I got rich” then I’d have an opportunity to change the world and make an impact. You know what I realized though? Money doesn’t change people. It merely reflects who they really were. Meaning, if you do good without money, you’ll do great things with it. If you’re evil and selfish without money, guess what…you’ll be even worse with it. But you don’t need money to change the world.

A lot of people ask Trent and myself, “how do you get such a large following, followers, fan, friends, etc.” I’ll tell you the secret. We Didn’t TRY to… We set out to better ourselves and the people around us, and repeated that process, over and over. When people bought in to bettering their lives, we encouraged them to reach out to the next man. That simple.

Remember, you can’t build an empire by having a goal to build an empire, you have to impact people.

Over the past 3 years, Trent Shelton, myself and the wonderful team that God has placed in our lives from all the over the country, have built one of the largest online communities for spiritual growth, personal development, and positive change with our Rehab Time Organization.

But if you do want to know how we go about changing the world and how you yourself can change the world, here are some a couple of things you can do. None of them will take more than a few seconds or minutes of your day and you don’t have to do them all, but every single one of them, if you do one a day, will undoubtedly help change the world.
Smile

It’s the universal language. A smile says everything anyone needs to hear, without having to say a word. Smile at your loved ones, smile at strangers, smile at your barista at Starbucks, smile at the officer giving you a ticket, or the clerk at your local Wal-Mart. You’ll be surprised at how many people haven’t seen a smile in a long time and really need to see yours.

Affect who you can affect

Don’t worry about the people you can’t reach; when it’s time for you to reach them, God will open that door. I’d love to go help the homeless refugees in Africa too, but guess what, there’s homeless people within a few miles of where I live and you live. You know that “white elephant gift” ugly sweater that you laugh at and would never wear? Someone on the street tonight is praying for that “miracle and blessing” of warmth. Sometimes, we speak to crowds of a couple thousand, and that’s cool, but you’ll find Trent and I giving the same effort to small crowds of 20. Anytime someone is listening to you, no matter how important or unimportant you THINK they are, you have an opportunity to change a life. You don’t know what they’re thinking or going through, and you don’t know that your words could be what they need to really make something of themselves. So many times when I thought the crowd wasn’t as receptive as I’d have liked, I get emails or approached after a speech by someone who thought I said the most profound and life changing things. I wrote a blog before and received an email from a young man who was on the verge of suicide, and said the blog gave him hope and he was going to give it another go. I don’t say that to brag, I say it to say this…what if I didn’t write that blog? Would someone be missing a brother, a friend, and a son today? The same thing goes for your life, are you doing your best for the people in your house, phonebook, class, office, or church? Ironically, the people we see the most, are those we often neglect the most and “assume” they’re fine. That’s not always true. Focus on those you can help.

Help one person a day that you don’t know

It’s one of the five love languages, “random acts of kindness.” Make it a point to do one helpful thing per day for someone you don’t know. Whether it’s smiling and opening a door for someone, paying for the coffee of the person behind you, leaving extra minutes on the parking meter, giving a random high-five to a stranger, just something – anything. Once a day. You’ll change more lives by doing this than most things money could do to change lives. Case in point, I posted a status about doing this yesterday and Jenni, a friend of mine, did so.

She said, “Your status came to mind as I walked through Wal-Mart and said “have a blessed night” and “I am blessed” to a patron and to an employee. The patron hugged me and the employee cried- both saying they NEEDED to hear that tonight. You never know how God will use you to touch others.” Powerful huh? They NEEDED to hear that? Her seemingly simple act of kindness which took about 3 seconds probably, had an immense impact on two people. And those people will probably continue the trend and tell others to be blessed. Just think if we all do that? See what kind of positive chain reaction that can start?

Pray for People

This is the single most important and life changing thing you can do for anyone. I absolutely hate when people say “I’ll pray for you, it’s the least I can do.” NO IT’S NOT. IT’S THE ABSOLUTE MOST YOU CAN DO. You don’t have to say long prayers and you don’t have to worry about what you’re saying. I myself, admittedly and not the best “public prayerer” out there. But God doesn’t base his prayer answers on the eloquence or wordplay in your prayers; He just wants you to pray. When you pray for someone, you’re giving them the ultimate gift, a relationship and enhanced connection with the Creator. I can attest to this, because it happened to me yesterday, caught me off guard, but had a huge impact on my day. I have been uber sick lately and was not having a good day at all. A good friend of my Juan Terrazas (whose journey and story will bring you to tears) stopped by my house to discuss some music and his upcoming album and book. Obviously, he saw I wasn’t feeling well, and while he could have just said “alright well holler when you’re better” and left like most people would, he said, “Can I pray for you?” And he did. Right there at my door step. And then he left. And guess what, do you think I still had that throat soreness, splitting headache, and body aches this morning? Nope. God’s powerful, and so is prayer if we’ll extend it to those around us.

The bottom line is, you never know who’s “at the edge” in their life, and your one act of kindness is what they needed to see to still have faith in humanity and themselves. Do your part to start that positive chain reaction today and change the world!

Recently I’ve been looking into getting a new car so I stopped by the Cadillac Dealership to talk to my brother about the latest and greatest. Never knew you could learn so much from a Test Drive. But as in most things in life, if you’re open minded, you can learn from any situation. Rolling around in the V-Coupe CTS and the Brand New XTS, talking about life as much as features, I learned a lot from my younger brother.

VALUE

My brother, who works at Sewell, told me the realest thing. He told me, he (and the company) isn’t concerned with necessarily giving you the “best price,” but they undoubtedly will give you the best value. The car that you need, with the features you want, and more importantly the services to go along with it to keep your car happy and healthy for its lifetime. Now I think this is important, because we live in an “I want the best deal” sort of world where all we see is the bottom line. But, if you think about it, if it’s only about price or results, are we not selling ourselves short? If someone is working with you or for you, wouldn’t you rather them do a job correctly as opposed to quickly? If you’re in a relationship, do you want someone who drags you down but is “low maintenance”, or someone who adds value to your life, inspires you, and makes you a better person? Value is paramount.

NECESSITY

Most of us spend our entire life trying to keep up with the Joneses. Guess what, they can’t be caught. First of all, who are the Joneses, and what do they look like? Exactly, no one knows. Once you get to a certain level, the “Joneses” change. Once you can afford a Nice Car, there’s someone else who just bought a Plane. Once you can afford a plane, there’s someone else who just bought a Yacht. If you chase after things to measure up to people, you’ll be chasing your whole life. My brother’s advice, as he gives to other people, “get what you need, not what you think everyone else wants you to drive.” This can be said about most things in life, from food, to housing, to vehicles, to jobs, and even relationships. Don’t worry about public perception of what you do or what you have, because you can’t please them anyways. Focus on what works for you and you only.

GET ADVICE

Nobody knows everything. The main difference between smart and ignorant people is that smart people aren’t afraid to ask questions. They ask questions to those more qualified than them in the topic they seek to learn more about. As I spouted off all the knowledge I thought I knew about cars from “the trusted source” the internet, my brother stopped me and said, “I’m in the car industry, I see it firsthand every day, I know what’s real and what’s not.” By listening, I learned a lot about the car, the stuff you don’t see on the internet, the stuff a professional knows. In life, when we ask questions to people who know, we not only save ourselves time and heartache, we get factual information to help us make whatever decision we’re trying to decide on. As my brother said, “The smartest people ask the most questions.”

QUALITY

Quality over quantity should be the modern golden rule. Unfortunately, we live in a world of “the more the merrier,” when that couldn’t be further from the truth. Would you rather have 1,000 pennies or one 3 carat diamond? Would you rather buy 10 of something that breaks every other day or pay a little more for something that is going to last you a long time (and therefore save you money in the long run)? It’s clear the Cadillac’s are quality. From the sleek look, to the electronics and wood grain interiors, premium sound, the cars have it all. The XTS is made so well that even the seat vibrates on one side when someone is in your blind spot! I swear the Cadillac engineers thought of everything. My brother said it’s not just the quality of the cars themselves, but the warranties and quality of the provided services that really make the Car what it is. For instance, he said, you could go find a cheaper Car somewhere, but when you’re having to pay to have it repaired, pay for oil changes, etc., you’re not going to be happy. Or you could pay a little more now for a quality product with premium service and be happier in the long run. The same could be said for relationships; do you want to date a bunch of meaningless people, or find that ONE that’s the person of your dreams? Do you want to go through life working job after job, or do you want a fulfilling career? Happiness is in the quality.

ADVANCEMENT

Finally, the reality is that life is advancing at a rapid pace, whether or not you are. Ten Years ago, having a 6 disc changer in the car and a subwoofer was about as high-tech as you could get in a car. Driving this Cadillac XTS, the Cadillac CUE system blew me away. There’s literally apps on it, you can swipe your hand and move apps from one screen to the dash and back, change the way the dash looks, you can basically have a conversation with the car; needless to say, it does EVERYTHING. It blew me away. You can set the car to a certain speed and if someone breaks hard in front of you, the car will gauge the distance and warn you so that you don’t wreck. There were so many features my head was spinning. All this in one car.

Companies, products, and humans as a race continue to evolve and improve. Are you doing the same in your life or are you merely coasting?

*Intro* Dflo

I’m tired of living Day to Day
Like Everything’s Alright
Just one thing on my Mind
I’m just waiting on my Moment
Waiting on my Moment
Waiting on my Moment

*Verse 1* Dflo

I spent last night plottin new situations
like I need a change in renovation
Gotta get me outta this crib, out this job, out this bummy old Whip
But i was never owed S*** so i gotta go to work
race to the death and I gotta go first
See I know plenty dream but it’s hard to live em
A world of lies and sin, I just hope that i’m forgiven
Rough beginnings make better ending at least I’m told
Michael Phelps in a tight race, watch me reach for Gold
You can hate this but I shoot for greatness
with a Dirt Aim
See I do me, i am truly, doing my thang
Sayin Ya’ll Lame
Never care that they fail me
Play the corner like Beltre
Middle finger to what they tell me
Cuz I know my dreams will never fail me
It’s Flo

*Chorus* Dflo

I’m tired of living Day to Day
Like Everything’s Alright
Every night just one thing on my Mind
I’m just waiting on my Moment
Waiting on my Moment
They say “you got that” O H*ll nah
Next time it’s Mine
As long as I stay hustling I’m gonna shine
I’m just waiting on my Moment
Waiting on my Moment

*Verse 2* Baylor

Sittin in the Rockin Chair Just Waitin on it

Between a Rock a Hard Place be patient on it

There’s a real thin line between Faith and Lazy

I crossed the line in my mind between Insane and Crazy

What if I went all in and ended up a broke or they labeled me a joke

Suppose I had wheels turnin like a bike spoke, but I might choke

used to have high hopes

Tired of waitin for the right quote, to keep me motivated

I been cultivated my dreams so long even my freshest ideas now seem outdated

no i’m not ok, but ima change it all today

Take the moment by the head n shoulders and wash the past away

Cuz the Day to Days, turn to year to years, and the dreams they slowly fizzle

You got a begin date and an end date but ya life is the cash and the dash in the middle

*Chorus* Dflo

I’m tired of living Day to Day
Like Everything’s Alright
Every night just one thing on my Mind
I’m just waiting on my Moment
Waiting on my Moment
They say “you got that” O H*ll nah
Next time it’s Mine
As long as I stay hustling I’m gonna shine
I’m just waiting on my Moment
Waiting on my Moment

I had the opportunity last night to watch a great long time friend of mine, John Martin (@JohnMartinLive) perform in the Dallas leg of his Nationwide Tour. Now John has made songs for Universities, he’s sung the national anthem in front of 70,000+ at the Big XII championship game, and many other accolades galore.

Though he’s reached immense success already, what’s unique about this tour is that it’s a living room tour. The “Old School Party in the Living Room” tour. City to city, just him and his girlfriend, a stool, a guitar, and some cd’s. John plays full concert in front of 20-30 people or however many people show up in each town.

As I sat there and watched the show, and saw the people, most of whom didn’t know John or exactly what they were coming too, I couldn’t help but learn a thing or two.

“Get Togethers” Are a lost art

Do you remember when you actually had to go to your friend’s house to interact? Remember when it wasn’t a faceless text message, online video game, or social network? Back when people actually got together, interacted, laughed, shared stories, and played board games. You’re probably thinking, man it’s been forever! It has for me too. Last night at the show, at the home of a wonderful couple, my intention was to go listen to my friend. I left having made lots of new friends, got to know new people, got the heads up on some church group meetings, stories of my new friends ski accidents, and even witnessed a baby throw an iPhone.

It was a blast. Instead of spending money on outfits, VIP tables, bottle service, and all that stuff to impress people I don’t like and don’t like or care about me, I got to truly interact with people, learn their stories, and made new friends. Why can’t we all go back to how fun “used to be?”

“You’ll never know if you never Try”

If you’re reading my blogs, you’re not no doubt a person that aspires to be something, you have a goal. As you should. I sat there and watched my friend, who is literally driving across the country in a Navigator with his girlfriend on a national tour. Now that’s something that he could have talked about for 20 more years and played the game many of us play called the “one day I’m gonna…” game. You know what I’m talking about, that one big dream or goal you have that you keep thinking you’ll do “when the time is right.” I ask you this though, if life keeps getting in the way of your dreams, at what point will you go live them? John probably had more excuses not to go on tour, for instance he found out halfway through the tour that he had a ear tumor and had to have emergency surgery (enough to make most people quit), but he got it, and got right back on the road, why? Because he’s living a dream. If you’re dream is big enough, nothing will stop you from it, so why not start living it now? Why not go for it, right now? Don’t wait until it’s too late and live the “wonder what if” life, live your dreams.

“Money can’t buy what I’m Looking for”

A strong lyric in one of John’s songs, the Bank, says something to the effect of you can have it all and still be poor; cause money can’t buy what you’re looking for. Money can’t buy love. Many can’t buy lasting relationships and real friendships. In fact, money can’t buy anything that actually truly matters in life. So why is it that we neglect friendships, families, and loved ones to chase money? I’m not saying money isn’t it important and you shouldn’t want it, I’m just saying we can all learn to not let it come between us and the things that really matter. What good is it to have the world, but have no one to share it with?

“Love is Real”

That was all around me. There were married couples talking about their engagements, their were mothers looking at their sons, their were fans of the music itself, their was John and Glenda playfully going back and forth between songs, and there was even me sitting there in love with my iPhone (jk), the point is, if you look around, Love really is everywhere.

More importantly, love is the thread of life; it’s the tie that binds us. Hate, jealousy, all those things try and tear us apart, but at the end of the day Love Wins, Love keeps us going, Love keeps us enjoying old school parties in the living room.

Love is Real

*Intro* Dflo

I’m living like I never really loved
Things is getting hard and the times are getting tough
The rain gonna fall and i’ll ask for a blessing
But before I go here’s my Lasting Impression
I’m living like I never really loved
Things is getting hard and the times are getting tough
The rain gonna fall and i’ll ask for a blessing
But before I go here’s my Lasting Impression

*Chorus* Dflo

Wishing they could see
Wishing they Could see
All the work I do, will they remember me one day
But when i’m gone off this earth tell me what is is that they gonna say
What is they gonna say
What is they gonna say
When i’m gone off this earth tell me what is is that they gonna say

*Verse 1* Dflo

I’ll tell you what they gonna say
Did he live his dreams?
Never had a crown but he fit for a King
Never did he lane switch
Had some fake friends
Said they was loyal to they dogs and they became Vick
Man, this life is full of pain
But ask the wrong person they gonna say that pleasure looks the same
And if you ask me, I feel there’s too much stress here
Talented as hell but the music falls on deaf ears
And what am I supposed to do
When the world’s on a balcony and always looking over you
You’ll get your chance when the hard work meets timing
I hear the most noise when i’m in complete silence
Like these voices keep screaming at me
Maybe it’s God trying to see me happy
Cuz He aint put us on this earth so we can live in sorrow
See we gifted with the present and might not see tomorrow
Live it while you can

*Chorus* Dflo

Wishing they could see
Wishing they Could see
All the work I do, will they remember me one day
But when i’m gone off this earth tell me what is is that they gonna say
What is they gonna say
What is they gonna say
When i’m gone off this earth tell me what is is that they gonna say

*Verse 2* Baylor

I hear the fat lady singing at me
At the same the Demons screaming at me
Man i swear this life is trigger happy
Shooting for my dreams, but all the while it seems
I’m in the wrong hoodie, wrong hood
Does anybody hear my screams?
Guess Not. They say I got potential
I’m just fighting through my issues trying to keep it influential
Still I wonder “Hey would anybody miss you”
If I end up Treyvon’d on the wrong side of a pistol
No tissues, I no longer shed tears
Thought I was racing for dreams, they became nightmares
Now i’m fighting these fears, but the truth I fear
Is that the monster that i’m facing is the face in the mirror
So everynight I pray and the protection I seek
Is from the same name as the reflection I see
I burned a lot of bridges and I learned a lot of lessons
But I swear I gave my all and I earned a lot of Blessings
I’m racing for Dreams

*Chorus* Dflo

Wishing they could see
Wishing they Could see
All the work I do, will they remember me one day
But when i’m gone off this earth tell me what is is that they gonna say
What is they gonna say
What is they gonna say
When i’m gone off this earth tell me what is is that they gonna say

I’m living like I never really loved
Things is getting hard and the times are getting tough
The rain gonna fall and i’ll ask for a blessing
But before I go here’s my Lasting Impression
I’m living like I never really loved
